In today’s world of fast food, the words fresh and gourmet have been used so much that the consumer no longer knows what those words really mean.

Consumers used to think fresh meant from the garden to the chopping board. Today, fresh veggies are perceived as opening a bag that contains vegetables that are pre-sliced, sprayed with chemicals, packed in a bag that is injected with CO2. Typically, these veggies are a week old before they are even delivered by the distributor to the restaurant.

When it comes to meats, once again like veggies, many restaurant operators use the word fresh.

Last time I checked, pigs, turkeys and cows didn’t grow in perfect circles that enable us to slice perfectly round slices of meat. Fact is, until the farmers learn to grow the same sized pig every time, every ham will be a different size. They then are cooked and sliced accordingly.

What the majority of our competitors do is, take for example, turkey, they remove turkey meat from the breast bone, it is placed into a giant mixer, it is mixed with different fillers that bind the meat, then it’s extruded into a tube. It’s then cooked and sliced by a computer operated slicing machine, thereby providing us consumers with the ever-so-delightful, perfectly round slice of mystery meat.

At Jimmy John’s, vegetables are brought from the fields to the packer to the shipper to my restaurants. They are unpacked, washed, sliced and served to you. They are genuinely fresh - this is my definition of fresh. From the field to the truck to the store to the slicer to your sandwich. That’s why mine taste better, they are made with fresher stuff. My definition of fresh and their definition of fresh are significantly different.

My turkeys are fresh, boneless turkey breasts that are seasoned with salt, baked fresh and sliced fresh every day. They are all different sizes because like pigs, the farmers haven’t learned to grow equal sized turkeys yet. Because computers cannot think like humans, each of our turkeys is hand-sliced in every single Jimmy John’s restaurant around the country every single day.

Add to this Real Hellmann’s® mayonnaise (the most expensive and best), real olive oil, real red wine vinegar, real Grey Poupon mustard, genuine kosher dill pickles and homemade kettle chips that contain virtually nothing but potatoes, sea salt, and flavorings.

It’s the real deal folks, no BS here, no fake stuff, no additives, no fillers - it’s the real deal. My momma always told me that all you have in life is your integrity. She also told me that the best cooks cook with a lot of love in their heart. Well I have lots of love, I try to live my life by doing unto others, and I could never ever BS you on ingredients. Besides, if I did, my momma would kick my butt real hard.

My definition of fresh is worlds apart from the rest! Mine taste better because they are made with better stuff.
